WebQuest: Latin America Postcard

A WebQuest for 6th Grade Social Studies

Mr. Greenberg

Introduction

After studying about Latin America in social studies class, you and your family decided to take a trip to one of the beautiful countries located south of the border. As you go through this WebQuest you will learn even more about the country you are visiting.

The Task

You and your family are vacationing in a Latin American country. The country will be selected from the list I have provided. You will be making a “picture perfect postcard” to send back to me and your classmates writing a letter to describe how much fun you are having and what you are seeing and doing. The postcard will also include pictures/drawings showing some of the sights you are seeing. Make us wish that we were there with you.

Goal:  To create a picture perfect postcard using specific web sites to help you learn more about the Latin American country that you have chosen.

Process and Resources

Process

The information you will be gathering from the web sites about Latin America will be helpful in designing your postcard. Feel free to use other resources as well to help you learn what there is to see and do in your country.

Follow these steps to complete your Picture Perfect Postcard:

1.                   Research facts and information about your country. Remember to take notes!

2.                 Use the facts to write an interesting letter to me and your classmates. Your letter should promote your country as a fun place for a family vacation.

3.                 Edit and proofread your rough draft. Make sure you have all the information needed to make your letter complete.

4.                 Type a final copy of your letter. Proofread and spell check before you print it!

Here is what the “letter” should include:

bullet

An introduction paragraph.

bullet

The name and location of the country (use absolute and/or relative location).

bullet

The name of the capital city and any other important cities you might visit.

bullet

A description of the people, wildlife, plant life, climate/weather, etc.

bullet

Any physical features (mountains, deserts, plains, plateaus, rivers, bodies of water) that you have seen in the country.

bullet

Information about the culture of the country – religion/religious holidays or celebrations, favorite foods, language, customs, clothing, sports and other unique activities.

bullet

Write a conclusion to your letter. This should summarize the information you wrote and also end the letter. Your name should go at the end of the letter.

5.       Staple the note onto the left half of a sheet of construction paper.

6.      Write the school’s address on the right half of the construction    paper.

                             Forbes Middle School

                             1911 NE Inner Loop

                             Georgetown, TX 78626

7.       Design a stamp for your postcard. The stamp should be approximately 3″- 4″ square. You could draw or print out a picture, such as a flag, flower, plant, or animal, to represent the stamp.

8.        Glue the stamp to the upper right corner of your postcard.

9.       Now you are ready to work on the “picture” part of the postcard. This part will be on the reverse side of the construction paper.

Here is what the “Picture” side of the postcard should include:

·         The name of your country.

·        A drawing or scene that illustrates sights you are seeing while on vacation. You could also print out pictures and glue them on the postcard. Make it look pretty!
