Search for Definitions from a Different Point of View
From Merriam-Webster and QA International, Visual Dictionary Online is an interactive dictionary with an innovative approach that will help students to learn English in a visual and accessible way. A quick glance at the index is all it takes to connect words with images. For example, students can type a term like narwhal into the easy index search box to zero-in on an illustration of this marine creature with its spiraled, 10-foot tusk. Or students can explore 15 major themes to access more than 6,000 images related to a variety of engaging, browsable topics. Additional features include a Game of the Week, played by associating words with images, and audio pronunciations spoken by real voices.

Build Your Vocabulary—and Feed the World
In October 2007, John Breen, a computer programmer in Indiana, debuted Freerice.com, which he had initially created as a way to help his son prepare for the SAT. Today, some 500,000 people daily visit this vocabulary-quiz Web site. And while word-game fun is part of the draw, players get an extra jolt of “feel good” joy: FreeRice donates 20 grains of rice to the United NationsWorld Food Program (WFP) every time a player selects the correct definition for a particular word. Paid for with advertising income, 4 billion grains have been won for the WFP so far. That’s 160 metric tons, or enough to feed 200,000 people for one day. FreeRice has a custom database containing thousands of words at varying degrees of difficulty. There are words appropriate for people just learning English and words that will challenge the most scholarly professors. In between are thousands of words for students, businesspeople, homemakers, doctors, truck drivers, retired people—in short, everyone! FreeRice automatically adjusts to keep you at the “outer fringe” of vocabulary, where learning can take place. There are 50 levels in all, but it is rare for people to get above level 48.
