PROCEDURES:
Students will get into groups form their own country. A name
is assigned for each country, and type of government is determined by a coin
toss. Heads is democracy (all members vote on all decisions) and tails is
autocracy (the group leader becomes the dictator). The countries are then
responsible for making a code of laws that defines rules and procedures for
working together as a group. Then the group decides on roles and
responsibilities.
a. Group Leader: responsible for
problem solving within group
b. Finance Minister: handles tokens
and accounting; keeps up with the classroom ledger every day
c. General: in charge of purchasing
armies and responsible for all military decisions on battle days
d. Citizen - takes care of product
sheets and supplies; turns in assignments on behalf of the group
The Clash of Nations Project uses a monetary system to trade
assignments for tokens. Students will turn in daily work and products to earn
tokens for their country. The group can earn 3 tokens for each daily grade, and
10, 15, or 20 tokens for each product. Higher token value is associated with the
difficulty of product completion. The products are associated with the subject
material we will be studying in class.
Each country begins with 20 tokens. Each additional token
must be earned by turning in products and daily work. Each country must pay 1
token a day for taxes. The money system is on paper only, kept up to date with
the Finance Minister's ledger. No physical tokens are actually given.
When the class has Battle Days, we use Risk rules.
Armies cost 3 tokens each, and “war” consists of the roll of dice. Countries
that are conquered must surrender their entire treasury and all armies, as well
as pay a daily tribute of 3 tokens to the conquering country for 5 days
following battle. Conquered countries may be liberated if they:
a. attack and defeat their conquerors
in war (revolution)
b. form an alliance with another
country to attack their conqueror and “free” them from the conquering country.
In an alliance, the two allied countries may combine all armies
