Forbes Tennis
2007-2008
Welcome to Forbes Tennis. It is my
pleasure to be your coach. I look forward to coaching you
and having a great year of tennis. On this page I hope to answer
some of the questions you may have about the tennis program.
This is my second year as a teacher and coach. If feel like
last year was successful and received many complements from
parents about how I ran the program. Not to say Im perfect by
any means but we had a good first year together and Im
looking forward to even better things happening in 07-08.
Expectations/Rules/Policies/Information
¨
Tennis is offered year round for 7th &
8th grade boys and girls.
¨
UIL policies and guidelines will be followed by
all athletes of GISD. The tennis manual can be found at
UIL
Tennis. Players, parents and coaches should be
familiar with these.
¨
Every athlete is required to have a physical exam
and sign a drug testing consent form prior to participating in
workouts. If you have not already done so, please take care of
both of these requirements as soon as you can. You will not be
allowed to participate until they are done.
¨
Tennis consists of a fall and spring season. Fall
Tennis is from September to November and Spring Tennis starts up
in February and ends in April. These times are considered to be
In Season. Times outside these months will be considered Off
Season.
¨
According to the number of students that sign up
for tennis, there may or may not be tryouts. New players are
only added if there is room and they meet eligibility
requirements.
¨
Athletes may join tennis after completing another
sport (volleyball, football, etc) as long as the coach is made
aware of this at the beginning of the school year and there is
room on the team for them.
¨
By the time school starts, a competition uniform
(shirt, shorts/skirts) for matches will be chosen. All players
will be required to wear a team uniform for
school/district/tournament play.
¨
Conditioning and practice will continue throughout
the school year. Practices will include, but are not limited
to, stretches, running, lifting weights, quickness and agility
drills, aerobic and anaerobic training, ball and racket drills.
¨
Practice will take place in your assigned
Athletics class. Extended practices will be one or two
days per week, in the fall. Seventh grade at 7:45 a.m.,
Eighth grade until 4:30
p.m. Seventh grade students come dressed for tennis. Bring
school clothes to change into. Eighth grade students will take
their belongings out to the court, ready to leave when picked
up.
¨
Coach V. will be in the locker room around
7:30 a.m. and stay until 4:45 p.m. No one is allowed in the locker
room without a coach present. Seventh grade players may be
dropped off at the courts until 7:40 a.m, dressed and ready for
practice. Anyone arriving after
that time must be dropped off at the front of the school.
Please plan to arrive early so that you may loosen up and
stretch out adequately.
¨
Please pick-up 8th grade players at 4:30 p.m.
Eighth graders are encouraged to wear their workout
clothes home.
¨
ALL tennis players must dress out everyday for
tennis conditioning and practice. There will be consequences
for not dressing out or being late to practices. If you are
absent, call or email Coach V, first thing in the morning.
¨
Lockers will be assigned the first day of school
(for boys). Coach Krog will be assigning girls lockers. At this
time, locks are not available for boys. Please bring a
combination lock with you the first day of school. Have the
combination written down with student name to give to Coach V.
Things are stolen and come up missing from time-to-time. You
are encouraged to lock everything up.
¨
It suggested that at least two pairs of practice
clothes be purchased so that you will always have a clean set.
All practice clothes will need to go home at least on a weekly
basis for laundering. Lockers may be utilized for change of
clothes and rackets.
¨
Players are encouraged to challenge other players
for position on the "ladder." You may challenge 1 person per week and someone
directly above your own position on the ladder. More than
likely, I will assign matches to keep everyone playing.
¨
Dual matches will be played during the season on
weekdays. A maximum of 1 match per week will be scheduled.
Tournaments are played on Saturdays. Usually there are about
2-3 Fall tournaments and 2-3 Spring tournaments. A monthly
calendar will be sent home with each player and posted on my
staff website. Practice times and match/tourney schedules will
be listed. Practice times may change depending on the match
schedule.
¨
Bussing will be provided to all matches. If the
match is played in Georgetown, the players are bussed to Tippit
or Benold and the parents are asked to pick their child up at
that school. Players will not be bussed back to Forbes after
a Georgetown match.
¨
Bussing is provided to and from all out of town
tournaments and school matches. The player must ride the bus to
an out of town tournament, but has the option of riding home
with their parent, if the parent is at the tournament. Players
may NOT ride home with anyone else. For all in town tournaments
(Tippit, Benold and GHS), the players are asked to meet the team
at that site NO bussing.
¨
Injuries if an athlete becomes injured or
complains of pain, let the coach know immediately. We hope that
we have no injuries, but if we do tell someone! The key to
preventing injuries and optimizing performance in tennis is
clearly, Get in shape to play tennis, by conditioning yourself
optimally for tennis and prepare your body for the stresses of
the game. When an injury occurs, notify coach immediately and
stop all play.
¨
Players are encouraged to bring a water bottle for
practice. The courts are extremely hot. Players must hydrate
continually before practice, throughout practice, and after
practice.
