Elements of Literature Book Report

 

Students will draw  a color illustration and write 1-3 complex sentences to describe major events and ideas from their novels.   One page will be completed for each of the following elements of literature being studied in class this quarter.

 

  1. Beginning (Exposition)
  2. Setting
  3. Main Characters  (This page will be completed as a tree map)
  4. Inciting Incident
  5. Rising Action (3 separate pages)
  6. Climax
  7. Resolution
  8. Conclusion
  9. Conflict (2 separate pages) (labeled as man v/s man, man v/s nature, or man v/s himself)
  10. Title Page (including title, author, student’s name and illustrations representing major themes in the book)

 

Grading will be based on:

  1. Use of major events in the story.
  2. Correct identification of events that represent the element of literature assigned.
  3. Correct spelling, punctuation, and capitalization  (One point will be subtracted for each error.)
  4. Grammatically correct sentences  (one point will be subtracted for each improper sentence)
  5. Legibility and neatness
  6. Use of a color illustration that covers the pentagon shaped page provided for the assignment.

The following worksheet, will help students get started on their sentences.  I have provided them with a copy in class, but some may need an extra copy. 

Book Report Worksheet

 

Beginning  (exposition):  The author sets up the story and gives background information.  

Write one expanded sentence that describes something important the author told in this part.

 

 

 Write a sentence that describes your setting.  Remember this is time and place.  What makes your setting significant or important to the story?

 

Characters:  List your main characters.  What are their relationships with each other?  What are their most important characteristic

 

 

Inciting incident:  The author introduces the main problem or conflict in the story.  The main problem is the one that goes on throughout the novel.  It is what your main character is trying to achieve.

Write 1-3 expanded sentences that explain the inciting incident in your book.

 

 

 

Rising Action:  major events in the story that lead to the climax

      Events that move the story forward and increase the tension between opposing forces.

 

Describe 3 separate major events in your story.  Think big!  Don’t write about small details.  What were the big ideas?

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Climax:  the turning point or point of highest action;  the point at which the story problem is solved

Write 1-3 expanded sentences that describe the climax of your book.  (Remember this is near the end of your book.)

 

 

 

Resolution: This is how the author solves the main problem or conflict in the book.

Write a sentence that describes the resolution in your book.

 

 

Conclusion:  The author wraps up the story and ties up loose ends.

Write a sentence that describes the conclusion of your book.
