Parents |
I look forward
to having your student in my class for the 2008-2009 school year. Classes
begin on August 25. During the year, I communicate with parents via a parent e-mail list. If you
have a 6th grader in my class, and
you would like
to be included in parent e-mails, please
send an e-mail to
Jaubert-SmithY@georgetownisd.org.
Parent
e-mails will remind parents of upcoming tests, projects, and other pertinent
social studies information.
I also send out reminders about Progress Reports and Report Cards.
There are many times that
students will need a parent signature on their work, to help keep you aware
of what we are doing in social studies, as well as keep track of current
grades. Please check the class
calendar.

During the year, in

our class

Geography, Contemporary Middle East
Second Nine Weeks: Historical and Contemporary Europe
Third Nine Weeks: Cultures of Africa and Asia
Fourth Nine Weeks: Latin America, World Connections
Lesson Cycle
In Social Studies, we follow a four to six
day lesson cycle which typically consists of:
Investigation
This phase consists of information gathering. This may
include individual or group research, note-taking, viewing a slide
show, watching a video, reading excerpts from a book, or utilizing another
primary or secondary resource.
Synthesis
This phase involves ordering the information gathered in the
investigation phase. This can include the creation of graphic organizers,
Thinking Maps, or other activities such as maps, charts, and graphs that help
organize the information.
Application
This phase requires the proper use of knowledge gained during
the investigation and synthesis phases. It includes (but is not limited to)
formal assessments such as tests, Links to Literacy, projects, GeoJournal assignments, and
informal assessments made by the teacher.
