What are illegal diamonds and conflict diamonds? What is the definition or description
of a diamond?
- It mean that diamonds are being smuggled across the borders of Africa
and being sold and used to buy weapons .
- Conflict diamonds are, diamonds that are fought over and cause wars .
- Diamonds are the hardest known mineral to man. They come in many
different colors, transparent, truculent white, yellow, green, blue, or
brown.
- Diamonds are also the most valuable mineral that we have found.
Why are diamonds important in Africa?
- The money they bring in is being used to fund the
wars between the government and rebels.
- Diamonds are the hardest mineral known to man.
- Diamonds are the rarest mineral ever found.
Why are conflict diamonds a problem in Africa?
- Conflict diamonds are a problem because the money they make is being
used to support wars.
- The money made from the diamonds is being used to purchase weapons for
rebel armies.
- Villagers are being turned into slaves to work in the diamond
mines and fields.
- People in Africa live in fear because of the
rebels.
How do conflict diamonds affect people in Africa?
- Because angry civilians, also known as rebels, fight to control the
diamond mines.
- This war has killed thousands of people and the rebels have
enslaved more to work and harvest their diamonds from the fields and mines.
What does the rest of the world think about conflict diamonds? (Not
including Africans) What is the global reaction?
- Many people believe that conflict diamonds are inappropriate and
some people, because of it will settle for cubic zirconium diamonds.
- The global reaction is simple, about 47% of the worlds population would
rather have fake (cubic zircon) diamonds than the real thing,
because they wouldn't settle for conflict diamonds.
What can be done to help the problem with of conflict diamonds? What
is being done to correct it?
- What is being done is this, the government troops are walking around
town looking out for
- If rebels come into a town or village the government troops will try to
fight them off.
- If they fail the rebels will probably take civilians to work in the
mines and fields.
What is my personal opinion? How feel and react to conflict diamonds?
- My opinion is I know that diamonds are valuable, but are they really
worth killing for?
