About the UIL program:
There are 4 UIL categories that
3rd - 5th grade students may participate in at Ford. Students compete at grade
level; 3rd grade students from Ford will eventually compete against other GISD 3rd graders,
etc. Students may try out all events, but may qualify to compete in the district
level in one event.
Number Sense:
This is a mental math contest consisting of 80 problems. All problems must be
solved mentally (no calculations allowed, no erasing, no mark outs). Students
are awarded 5 points for each correct answer and 4 points are deducted for each
incorrect or skipped problem. Problems are graded in numerical order and once a
student stops (for example at #30) that is the point at which the test will be
assessed.
Spelling:
Students are given a UIL spelling list from which to study. At Ford we will
break down the list and study specific words each week.
Oral Reading:
Students read a selection(s) of poetry to an audience and convey the meaning of
the poem through changes in voice and body.
Ready Writing:
This contest asks the student to select between two writing prompts and complete
an essay. For the district contest 1 ½ hours will be allowed.
This page will be updated weekly on
Thursdays and will contain the activities and study guidelines for UIL students
at Ford.
