Academics at FrostThe moment you enter the front doors of Frost Elementary, you witness a unique community of scholars and professionals who work together toward academic excellence. A superior education is provided for each scholar within this diverse community by encouraging mutual respect and enthusiasm for learning. To ensure understanding of expectations, scholarly behaviors are modeled and taught daily by teachers and staff. Students are referred to as “scholars” in order to recognize the importance of learning and to encourage them to connect knowledge with real world experiences. Scholars are encouraged to “dig deeper” as they learn in an atmosphere where critical thinking is fostered and developed. Instruction is provided by utilizing the interdisciplinary connection framework. The following concepts are incorporated daily into learning:
The 40 Developmental Assets are consistently practiced with a focus on nurturing a caring and challenging academic culture. This creates and maintains an “asset rich” school community. Teachers target key and innovative ideas that engage scholars as well as parent involvement. Thus, scholars are empowered to take the knowledge gained and achieve success. Language enrichment methods provide well balanced and comprehensive reading and writing programs. Some of these programs implemented are: Thinking Maps, Neuhaus Reading and Language Enrichment, Shared Reading, Guided Reading, Stop to Think, Ecenbarger Writing Workshop, Shared Writing, Action Based Learning, Esperanza, Reading Recovery, etc. A well balanced Math program is also provided with “hands-on” teaching practices as well as visual and action-based programs, such as: CGI Math, Marcy Cook Math, Daily BB Math, manipulative activities, strategies for word problems. It is plain to see that Frost scholars experience success because they understand the importance of learning. As they become independent learners with the ability to think at high and more challenging levels, they develop a confidence and gain positive self esteem. Parents and the community are also a vital part of our program at Frost such as: mentoring programs, intervention assistance, Benold Buddies, PALS, PIE, tutoring, important guest speakers, exciting field trips, fine arts contests, and much more. Frost Elementary is recognized as an outstanding school of excellence where “scholars begin early and finish strong!”
