GISD Teachers Receive A+ Grants

A+ Federal Credit Union recently announced that four GISD teachers have received grants from the A+ Education Foundation. Each of these teachers went through an application process in an attempt to gain additional funding for learning initiatives that would benefit their students and their schools.

Congratulations to the following teachers and their schools:

Tammy Smith, 5th Grade, Williams Elementary
Ms. Smith received $1000 for the "Books for a Buck" program, which will encourage students to buy low cost books to build in home libraries and increase reading skills through availability of books outside of school.

Margaret Vargo, Librarian, Carver Elementary
Ms. Vargo received $975 to buy sets of leveled reading books for use by 2nd grade students. The funds will be used to purchase books for students with higher reading levels.

Claudia Doerfler, PPCD, Ford Elementary
Ms. Doerfler received $978 to fund her project, "Teaching Autistic Nonverbal Children a Lifelong Communication Skill Through Visuals". The funds will go toward the purchase of equipment to help create communication visuals in various formats.

Lorraine Bonsall, 4th Grade, Williams Elementary
Ms. Bonsall received $240 to create "Hallway Math", a year-long project which will include posting math learning visuals along the 4th grade hallway, reinforcing math concepts outside the traditional walls of the classroom.
