Williams Elementary Teacher, Tammy Smith, Named Region 13 Elementary Teacher of the Year

Tammy Smith, 5th Grade Teacher at Williams Elementary in the Georgetown Independent School District has been named Region XIII Elementary Teacher of the Year.  Mrs. Smith has taught at Williams Elementary since 2002.  Her principal, Cheryl Lang, describes Tammy as “a master teacher who enthusiastically takes on the challenge of teaching diverse students to develop a love for reading and a love of learning about our country and its history.  She inspires students to set high expectations for themselves and through her targeted, structured classroom environment, helps each student reach these goals.  Mrs. Smith has a passion for our country, its history, and the people who created this great nation, and she carries this passion proudly into her classroom.”

Tammy received a standing ovation at the GISD Convocation on August 20 when former Superintendent, Joe Dan Lee, introduced her as the District’s Elementary Teacher of the Year for 2006-2007.  There are more than 350 elementary teachers in Georgetown ISD.  As the Region XIII Elementary Teacher of the Year, Tammy is a Semifinalist in the State Teacher of the Year Contest.  Region XIII is comprised of 60 school districts and 19 charter schools.  Since 1969, the Texas State Teacher of the Year Program has honored excellence in classroom education and provided a forum to showcase many outstanding educators whose efforts and example have inspired their students, their colleagues, and the communities they serve.

Every fall, the Texas State Teacher of the Year program honors two State Teachers of the Year – one in elementary education and one in secondary education – and Regional Teachers of the Year from each of the 20 Education Service Center regions.

Ms. Smith is an exceptionally dedicated knowledgeable and skilled teacher who inspires students of all backgrounds and abilities to learn.  In addition, she is highly respected and admired by her students, parents, and colleagues.  Tammy and her husband of 23 years, Barry, have two daughters. The Smiths live in Georgetown.  Tammy lives by a quote from Abraham Lincoln – “Whatever you are, be a good one.”  Tammy Smith exemplifies the best of the best as far as teachers go.
