Nothing should stand in the way of a child's learning. Nothing at all. Not child abuse, death of a loved one, disabilities, family crisis, peer problems, substance abuse, test anxiety... not anything.

What is a school counselor? A person who helps ALL children; a resource for teachers and parents; a liaison with outside agencies; a counselor; a coordinator; a consultant; a confidant to all.

Counseling Opportunities at McCoy:

Students may request to come to the counselor's office for a variety of reasons. Students need a pass from the teacher if they leave class or they may come during recess or before school. Staff members or parents may request that the Counselor visit with a student at a convenient time.

Classroom guidance activities relate to one or more of the content areas of the guidance curriculum established by TEA, including:

bulletself-knowledge and acceptance,
bullet interpersonal effectiveness and communication skills and appreciation of diversity,
bullet responsible behavior,
bulletconflict resolution,
bullet decision-making/problem-solving,
bullet motivation to achieve,
bullet goal setting,
bullet career planning.

GISD contracts with Intervention Services Unlimited (ISU) to provide both individual and support group counseling sessions with students. McCoy has access to an ISU counselor once weekly.

Students often have a variety of concerns needing special attention. Concerns may include friendship or peer problems, academic difficulty, test anxiety, school phobia, family crisis, illness or death of loved ones and pets, decision-making, anger management, self-esteem, self-confidence, responsible behavior, and many others. Please contact your child's teacher or the Counselor at 943-5032 if you have any concerns regarding your child.
