Welcome to McCoy Elementary! This is where you can find the latest class newsletter. A paper copy can also be found in the Tuesday folder each month.
HILL TOP NEWS
In math this week we will begin Chapter 5. This chapter focuses on addition and subtraction with regrouping. As we move into more higher level, multi-step problems, it is important that your child be able to recall facts automatically. If he or she still uses strategies such as counting with fingers or counting up in his or her head, please make sure your child is studying addition and multiplication facts each night. Another helpful suggestion is to practice skip counting by different numbers (count by twos, threes, fours, etc). In reading this week we are reading On the Pampas. Please make sure your child is reading the story each night. If it takes your child less than 20 minutes to complete the story, have him or her continue reading a book or his or her choice. Consistent reading time increases your child's fluency level and love of reading. These are both very important in making your child a lifelong reader. Each week the scholars are assigned 20 spelling words. The first ten words focus on a spelling rule. The last ten words are taken from the GISD non-negotiable spelling list and content areas. In social studies we are continuing to study communities. This week the scholars will learn about different types of communities (rural, urban, and suburban). This week in science we are continuing our Matter and Magnetism unit. We will be finishing up matter next week and will begin discussing magnetism after Thanksgiving break.
Homeroom
Housekeeping Assignment books and responsibility cards should be signed each night. They should both be found in your child’s C.A.N.D.Y. binder. There will also be a communication section in case you have questions or comments throughout the year. As everyone begins to prepare for Thanksgiving holidays, we are preparing for another busy week at McCoy. We are currently collecting change for United Way. The class that collects the most change wins a pizza party! BRING THE CHANGE! We also have our Thanksgiving luncheon on Tuesday at 11:10am and CiCi's Pizza Night on Tuesday night. We are looking forward to seeing you there! For those of you that missed the last pictures, picture retakes are on Thursday. HELP! Our class is in need of supplies! We need dry erase markers for scholar use. We use white boards and dry erase boards often for math review, and we do not have a full class supply of markers due to many of them running out of ink over the summer. If you can, please send a set of dry erase markers to help! If you need to contact me, my conference time is 1:30-2:10. You may email, send a note, or call me.
