Time Frame for Lesson

WEEK ONE: (classroom)
  • This lesson begins with a brief introduction to the Pop artist Andy Warhol.

WEEK TWO: (classroom)
  • A simple lesson on operating a digital camera and optional tripod is necessary.


  • Tips include:
    •  holding the camera steady
    •  framing/cropping the face in the viewfinder

"Before digital cameras are used"
  • Before digital cameras are used, “cropping” is discussed with students.

  • It is important for students to move in for a close-up of the person’s face.  The face should fill up the viewfinder.

  • Frame the face with a hand    or                  tilt the head for interesting poses.

WEEK THREE: (computer lab)
  • Before class, the teacher downloads all class photos into a class folder.

  • With guidance, students use their computer skills to create a personal folder.


  • Students choose one photo to save and use for the lesson.  They put it in their folder.

FINALLY…                                  THE REALLY EXCITING PART!
  • The teacher models how to edit a photo using Microsoft Photo Editor.
  • Using their own photos, students follow along exactly with the teacher to create a couple of edited photos.

  • Most importantly, students are shown how to “SAVE AS” their edited photos and place into their personal folders.

WEEK FOUR: (computer lab)
  • Briefly review all procedures to edit a photo and save it.

  • Now, students are ready to independently explore the editing effects to create and save at least 4 Andy Warhol-like Pop Art portraits.

A Good Rule…
  • Facial features must be recognizable.

WEEK FIVE: (computer lab)
  • Students create and save 1 or 2 more edited photos to add to the personal folder.


  • They select their  4 favorite edited photos, deleting others.

  • Before the next class meeting, a photo lab develops edited photos.

  • Students mount the 4 photos on assorted colored construction papers, and attach to a large black construction paper background.
