Nothing should stand in the way of a child's learning. Nothing at all. Not child abuse, death of a loved one, disabilities, family crisis, peer problems, substance abuse, test anxiety... not anything. What is a school counselor? A person who helps ALL children; a resource for teachers and parents; a liaison with outside agencies; a counselor; a coordinator; a consultant; a confidant to all. Counseling Opportunities at McCoy: Students may request to come to the counselor's office for a variety of reasons. Students need a pass from the teacher if they leave class or they may come during recess or before school. Staff members or parents may request that the Counselor visit with a student at a convenient time. Classroom guidance activities relate to one or more of the content areas of the guidance curriculum established by TEA, including:
GISD contracts with Intervention Services Unlimited (ISU) to provide both individual and support group counseling sessions with students. McCoy has access to an ISU counselor once weekly. Students often have a variety of concerns needing special attention. Concerns may include friendship or peer problems, academic difficulty, test anxiety, school phobia, family crisis, illness or death of loved ones and pets, decision-making, anger management, self-esteem, self-confidence, responsible behavior, and many others.
