Benevolent Projects at McCoy:

Many charitable organizations, churches, and individuals offer services and goods to many of our economically disadvantaged students and their families during the school year. The Assistance League of Georgetown Area supports needy elementary students through Operation School Bell by providing clothing and toiletries. Food baskets and meals are provided to selected families during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Project Share, various churches, and service organizations provide assistance for Christmas. Law enforcement agencies also provide help through the local police and sheriff's department. We are always very appreciative of this support for our students and their families. Individuals or groups desiring to help or families needing assistance of this nature should contact the Counselor.

Credit for Acceleration at McCoy:

Credit for Acceleration is offered by GISD annually. This offers the exceptional student the opportunity to advance a grade level. Students must pre-register in order to be eligible for evaluation. More information may be obtained through the office of the Director of Assessment, at 943-5000 ext. 6034 or at the GISD website http://www.georgetownisd.org/filing_cabinet/curriculum/AssessmentTestDates.pdf

Gifted and Talented Identification at McCoy:

Upon enrollment, new students are screened at parent request and may become eligible for G/T participation for the current year. All parents are notified in late fall of the spring open identification period for any student wanting to pursue screening for G/T participation for the next school year. Teachers, parents or other knowledgeable adults may refer a student for screening by contacting the student's teacher or the Counselor to request a G/T referral packet. Quality student work samples/products are an important part of the packet and should be saved throughout the year for inclusion in the packet. For further information and dates, click on http://www.georgetownisd.org/filing_cabinet/curriculum/AssessmentTestDates.pdf

Testing for students meeting the referral deadline will include both achievement and mental ability tests. Following testing, specific GATE activities, and receipt of all information, G/T committees will meet to review and evaluate the information submitted for each student. They will make a decision regarding student eligibility for any or all of the four academic areas: language arts, math, science, social studies. Following this meeting, parents will be notified of the committee's decision through the Counselor's Office. If declared eligible, written parent permission must be received before the student will be able to participate in the program for next school year. Mentoring Program at McCoy

All students may request a mentor at the beginning of the school year or at any other time during the year. A parent permission form must be completed but does not guarantee that a mentor will be available. Mentors visit weekly for about 30 to 45 minutes but not during academic time. The mentoring relationship lasts for one or more years and offers opportunities for academic and/or personal growth. The mentoring program falls under Partners in Education or PIE. More information can be found on the PIE website at http://www.georgetownpie.org

PALS Program at McCoy:

The PALS (Peer Assistance and Leadership) program provides Georgetown High School juniors and seniors who are trained to serve as mentors to fifth graders throughout the district. PALS come to McCoy once a week and work with students during their p.e. or lunch time. They address a variety of issues including self-esteem, confidence, leadership, study skills, friendships, academic improvement, and others.  Students are selected by their teachers and the Counselor for this program which starts in September and continues through May. Students must have parent permission to participate.

Screenings at McCoy:

Screenings and identification for ADHD, Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome, dyslexia, and others must be recommended by the S.A.I.L. Committee. Various staff members are trained to complete these screenings. Parents who have concerns regarding a child's behaviors or academics should express their concerns to the child's teachers first. If warranted, a S.A.I.L. referral will be made for possible screening recommendations.

Section 504 program at McCoy:

Students who are identified as having a disability and are not eligible for special education services may be eligible under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. This law states that these individuals will not be discriminated against because of their disabilities which cannot be caused by environmental, cultural, economic disadvantage or limited English proficiency. The disability must cause a substantial limitation to a major life activity, and the student must display an educational need for instructional modifications or support. Students with diagnosed or suspected disabilities must go through the S.A.I.L. process at any GISD campus prior to Section 504 consideration and placement. Annual meetings are held to review all aspects of the student's individual accommodation plan. A re-evaluation is required at least every three years.
