Semester 1 Reading requirements English I

Students are required to read an outside novel during the first nine weeks. The novel must be fiction. It may be checked out from our library or brought from home. A flip book will be assigned. (see link below)

Students are required to read an outside novel during the first nine weeks. The novel must be fiction. It may be checked out from our library or brought from home. A Novel Notebook will be assigned. (see link below)

Self-Select Novel Projects

    All students are required to read outside of class. They may choose a novel from the library, home, or bookstore. Each nine weeks students will be held accountable for their reading through projects. Some examples of projects follow:

Major Works include:

The Odyssey, Romeo & Juliet, Great Expectations, and To Kill a Mockingbird 

Grammar, mechanics, spelling, vocabulary, specific reading and writing skills, and mastery of the TEKS will be addressed throughout the year. In addition, teachers may include supplemental novels and plays, which are on the ninth grade novels list. Students are required to read a self-selected novel throughout the school year. Grammar workbooks will be provided at no cost.

A more detailed scope and sequence will be provided to students in class.
