ESL I- designed for those non-English speakers  with limited ability to communicate in English, to give students a firm background in a comprehensive, integrated program of basic English. Students will learn to use and comprehend spoken and written English.

Prerequisite- student is a new or recent immigrant to the US whose native language is not English and scores  Non-English on the IDEA-OLPTest.

Course Description- 3 class periods
Provides intensive instruction and practice to the low thru intermediate level. Provides an introduction to the sound system, stress, intonational and rhythmic patterns of English through listening and speaking exercises. Includes individualized instruction to improve basic reading comprehension. Requires practice in writing with emphasis on building basic sentence structures, grammar and sentence-level writing by developing and improving basic reading and vocabulary skills.

 Course Objectives/Educational Outcome
The student will be able to understand and produce English sound patterns and participate in conversation, to read and comprehend basic reading material and to write simple English sentences in journals and short paragraphs demonstrating knowledge of basic English structure.
