What  is ESL?

English as a Second Language is a program designed to teach English to foreign students, not only as a language -- unique and confusing-- but as a different and often baffling culture. It is an English course with essential elements which parallel to general elements of English classes. ( grammar, literature interpretation, writing mechanics, paragraph writing, and oral presentation, in addition to cultural orientation)

The classes are set up to offer a combination of class/group instruction as well as individualized lessons. Students are leveled according to language proficiency which determines the time spent in ESL. This time comes in four stages. The final stage before exiting the program is tutorial according to need with no scheduled ESL class. Then there are the 90 minute blocks of scheduled classroom instruction with tutorials as needed, as well as immersion classes during the initial language development stage.

An extended library may be found inside the ESL classroom with books ranging every reading level. All activities are used in order to raise all students to the next level of English proficiency. The ESL class is certainly diverse, dynamic, and decathlonic; but, it is never ever dull.

The motto of the ESL class is

"Diversity...Our strength

Unity... Our goal"

and it is this ability to be different yet work towards the united goals of

STRIVING FOR SUCCESS

with

TRADITION AND PRIDE IN EXCELLENCE

that makes this class special.
