Welcome to my home page!  My name is Richard Perkins. I am a special education teacher and reading/dyslexia specialist at Pickett Elementary. I am Basic Language Skills (multi-sensory language arts instruction) certified through Scottish Rite Learning Center of Austin, trained to instruct CEI (Creative Education Institute) computer multi-sensory instruction, and can instruct using the Shelton Reading Method (a phonics intensive multi-sensory approach).

I am trained to administer the Woodcock - Johnson Achievement Tests, the CTOPP (Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing) assesses phonological awareness, phonological memory, and rapid naming, TOWRE (Test of Word Reading Efficiency) measure of word reading accuracy and fluency. I can give several other reading assessments that help us know how to serve your child.

Education & Teaching Background:

This is my 6th year to instruct dyslexic students using the Basic Language Skills program and methodology. I have tutored children each summer using Basic Language Skills for the last 3 years.

bullet I have been a special education teacher in Georgetown Independent School District for 18 years.  I began at Annie Purl Elementary teaching special education Kindergarten and 1st grade students. For the last 10 years I've taught 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders in a Resource and Content Mastery setting.
bulletI began my teaching career working as a clinician in the Southwest Texas State Learning Clinic.

About me: I was born in Big Lake, Texas. My father was an educator for 40 years. My mother graduated from UT when she was 50 years old. My brother and I were raised in Austin, Texas. My wife and I live in Pflugerville with our 2 daughters - ages 3 and 7. My 14 year old son is a freshman in Leander. My wife has been a Kindergarten teacher in Pflugerville for 10 years. As a family we love to take trips, swim in rivers and springs, and be outdoors. My favorite activities are yard work, riding motorcycles, travel, and reading. I'm a Christian. I believe Jesus Christ was sent by God to save us and that only through Christ are we eternally happy and free. I do expect my students to show me respect and to try. I will treat your child as if they were my own. My wife and I look at what we do at school as mission work.
