About the Science Fair

The Pickett Elementary First Annual Science Fair will be held on January 25, 2008. Participation in the Science Fair provides a wonderful opportunity to bring science into your home. Selection of a project should match your child's interests and abilities.

Each child entering will receive a ribbon and/or certificate. Winners from each category will advance to the Austin Regional Science Festival held at the Palmer Events Center February 23, 2008.

Students may enter the following types of projects:

Collection with Classification

Exhibit: Model, Demonstration, or Display with Report

Experiment which follows the Scientific Method

Information regarding these types of projects may be found on the Austin Energy Science Festival website (www.sciencefest.org), in a handout that is available at Pickett, or email Pickett Science Fair coordinator Christine Davis at davisc@georgetownisd.org.

The Scientific Method

SCIENTIFIC PROBLEM-pose a question, what do you want to learn?

HYPOTHESIS-make an educated guess.

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT-figure out what supplies you need. Are they affordable? Easy to obtain? Safe? Do they follow the science fair regulations?

PROCEDURE-create a detailed step by step process for conducting the experiment. Number each step and include a control and a variable.

OBSERVATIONS-conduct the experiment and make notes about what happens.

CONCLUSION- answer your question. Did the results prove or disprove the hypothesis?
