About the Science Fair

The Pickett Elementary Annual Science Fair will be held on January 22, 2009. Participation in the Science Fair provides a wonderful opportunity to bring science into your home. Selection of a project should match your child's interests and abilities.

Our fifth grade students will be asked to do a project that involves an experiment; other grades have the opportunity to choose from an experiment, research, or collection activity.  Pickett Elementary will award 14 ribbons at the school level with those students continuing on the Austin Science Festival at the Palmer Events Center February 27, 2009.

Information regarding these types of projects may be found on the Austin Energy Science Festival website ( www.austinenergy.com ), in a handout that is available at Pickett, or email Pickett Science Fair coordinator Christine Davis at davisc@georgetownisd.org.

The Scientific Method

SCIENTIFIC PROBLEM-pose a question, what do you want to learn?

HYPOTHESIS-make an educated guess.

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT-figure out what supplies you need. Are they affordable? Easy to obtain? Safe? Do they follow the science fair regulations?

PROCEDURE-create a detailed step by step process for conducting the experiment. Number each step and include a control and a variable.

OBSERVATIONS-conduct the experiment and make notes about what happens.

CONCLUSION- answer your question. Did the results prove or disprove the hypothesis?
