Outreach Programs & Services :: Behavioral Programs

Georgetown Independent School District provides several programs for students with behavioral or discipline issues that may affect their performance in school. Long-term placements for behavioral or disciplinary problems are covered on the Alternative Education page.

Social Skills Training

This elementary program provides training in social skills such as problem-solving, avoiding distractions, and using self-control, to assist students in acquiring the skills they need to be successful. At each GISD elementary campus, a different social skill is taught each week and emphasized by staff. When behavior problems occur, students are referred to the social skill they should have used to make a better choice.

Anger Management Program

The anger management program is designed to counteract aggressive behaviors that create problems for youth in their interpersonal relationships at school, work, or home. The program objectives include analyzing triggers for anger and anxiety, linking thoughts with feelings and actions, and practicing and applying techniques to manage uncontrolled anger and preventing relapses.

Peer Mediation

Secondary students who have been trained in conflict resolution by qualified mediators/teachers provide mediations for students requesting a neutral third party to intervene in a disagreement. Mediators, working in pairs, help students learn to talk to one another without accusations, giving orders, or taking sides. The program supports the ongoing refinement of conflict resolution skills.

Behavior Improvement Center (BIC)

Behavior Improvement Centers provide short-term, highly structured environments which target inappropriate behaviors that interfere with a student's educational progress as they apply to the GISD Student Code of Conduct. BIC is a short duration placement program for students. The elementary BIC is located at Village Elementary, but serves all students in grades K-5. The secondary campuses each have their own BIC.

Prevention Intervention Training (PIT)

Prevention Intervention Training is an after-school discipline program offered at GISD secondary campuses from 4:00 - 5:00 PM. Students are placed in PIT training on a mandatory basis after receiving one or more demerits. Drill instructors from the Georgetown Alternative Program run the program, which includes social skills training and rigorous physical training. Students who complete PIT training receive a certificate of completion that can erase one demerit from their campus discipline record.

GAP Orientation Program

Offered one to two times per month during the school year at the Georgetown Alternative Program from 7:45 AM to 11:15 AM.  Any student in grades 6-12 receiving one or more demerits can be assigned to this program and erase one demerit upon successful completion.  The GAP Principal and drill instructors implement the program, which includes an overview of the GAP and code of conduct, intensive physical training, and social skills training.

Student Originated Academic Responsibility (SOAR)

The SOAR program is for special education students whose primary need is to gain control of their own behavior. The class is specifically designed to provide a comprehensive academic/therapeutic setting for those students unable to function successfully on a full-time basis in regular or other special education programs. The program goals are development of school adaptability, behavioral control, social skills, and appropriate handling of crisis situations.
