Outreach Programs & Services :: Mentoring & Tutoring


Through partnerships with several community organizations and with the assistance of dedicated volunteers and teachers, Georgetown Independent School District offers many mentoring & tutoring opportunities for students who need additional assistance.

Teacher Tutorial Sessions

Secondary teachers are in their classrooms at 8:15 AM each morning to provide tutoring assistance for their students. Additionally, many elementary and secondary teachers offer tutorials before or after school by special arrangement.

Content Mastery

Content Mastery (CM) is a program designed for all students who need additional academic support. Students are given extra help either within their regular classroom or in the campus content mastery lab. Students receive assistance if they are below grade level in reading, have skill gaps in math, are behind after an extended absence, need modifications in the regular curriculum that can not be given in the regular classroom, or need re-teaching in a content area.

At the elementary and middle school level, content mastery placement is determined by the classroom teachers and content mastery teacher. At the high school level, content mastery is only open to students who receive special education or 504 services.

PLATO

Plato is a self-paced, computer-based instruction program in the core curriculum offered under the guidance and supervision of a lab instructor. It is available at both GHS and NGC, and is open to any ninth-grader who did not pass enough required freshman courses at the Ninth Grade Campus to achieve full sophomore status. Plato also serves a select number of at-risk high school students requiring only a few credits to complete their graduation requirements.

TAKS Preparation Classes

TAKS preparation study sessions and/or improvement classes are offered at the high school level to help low-performing students master the basic grade-level curriculum as tested on the state-mandated Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) test.

TAKS improvement tutorials are also offered at the middle school level through the After School Action Program to assist middle school students identified through GISD's benchmark testing program as needing extra help.

SAT/ACT Prep Classes

These test preparation classes, offered at the high school level, address individual needs in test-taking skills. Practive on the SAT (Scholastic Aptitute Test) and ACT (American College Testing) are used to develop strategies to improve mathematical and verbal skills. Study Skills Electives

For 7th and 8th grade students who need to develop overall organization and good study habits, a Study Skills elective class is offered at the middle school level. These classes are designed to help students develop more effective study habits. Organization of materials, tools, and time-management are included in the course. Upon completion of the course, students have covered note-taking, listening skills, math studies, reading, studying for tests, and stress management. Georgetown Exemplary Schools Campaign - Tutorial Services

Georgetown Exemplary Schools Campaign provides educational assistance to children who are identified as in need of extra attention to achieve appropriate grade level success. Tutors provide each identified student with the individualized academic attention necessary for success in the classroom and in the standardized testing rquired by the state. Project Mentor

Project Mentor, a program of Georgetown Partners in Education, pairs students with an individual volunteer mentor to offer on-going guidance for their academic and personal growth. Mentors meet with their students on a weekly basis on the school campus. The program is open to all students in grades K-12, and more information may be obtained from the campus guidance counselor, or by contacting Georgetown Partners in Education.

Operation Achievement

Operation Achievement is a cooperative venture between Southwestern University and GISD. This enrichment and mentoring program pairs GISD middle school students with Southwestern student mentors who provide friendship, enrichment, and assistance with academic subjects. Upward Bound

The Upward Bound program assists first-generation and economically disadvantaged high school students and their parents with understanding the college admission process. The program focuses on instruction, tutoring, counseling, and activities which stress academics and exposure to post-secondary environments. Peer Assistance and Leadership Program (PALS)

Students in PALS participate in a class that helps them to develop skills needed to serve as peer counselors at the high school level and as mentor to 5th graders at district elementary schools. For more information, contact PALS at the high school at 943-5100.

Peer Buddies

The Peer Buddies program provides peer interaction among high school juniors and seniors with and without disabilities. Student learn about and from disabled students and provide mentoring and tutoring activities, as well as classroom assistance. In return, they receive 1/2 state credit for Peer Tutoring for Students with Disabilities. For more information, contact the GHS guidance office at 943-5102.
