STUDENT
ATTENDANCE
Student attendance is
extremely important to each student's academic success and to maintain enrollment
at Richarte High School. Texas Mandatory Attendance Policy states that a child
who has not yet reached their 18th birthday shall attend school
unless exempted by law. Failure to attend at least 90% of the days in the
semester could result in the loss of credits earned during that time period.
If
a student is going to be absent for any reason a parent / guardian MUST
contact Mrs. Gillispie at 512-943-5120, ext. 7221 with the following
information:
- Caller's name
- Phone number
- Student's name
- Reason for absence
Please be aware of the
following policies regarding absences:
EXCUSED
ABSENCES:
- Illness – Must be
verified by parent phone call or note.
- Medical – Must bring
a note from the doctor’s office. Most RHS students are only at school for 4
hours each day. Therefore, please schedule all appointments outside of school
hours.
- Medical All Day –
Must have a doctor’s note excusing them from school.
- Excused – A student
must bring a note from a parent / guardian to excuse any absence. NOTE:
Oversleeping / missing a ride is not a valid excuse.
- Court – If a student
has a court date and must miss class, please bring a note from the court
clerk.
- School Activities –
If a student will miss school due to school sponsored field trip the teacher
/ sponsor of the activity will turn in a list to the attendance office of
the students attending the function. No action is required on the part of
the parent / guardian.
- College Days – During
their Junior and Senior years, students are allowed to take days off from
school to visit colleges and universities. Juniors are allowed one college
day and Seniors are allowed three for the year. Students must get a college
day request form and have it signed by all of their teachers and by parent /
guardian. The form must be returned to the attendance office before the
student leaves campus. Upon returning to school, the student must provide
the attendance office with a letter from the university verifying the
visit. Failure to provide proper documentation could result in an unexcused
absence for the days missed.
- Religious Observance
(Holy Days) – A parent / guardian may arrange for the student to be absent
to observe a religious holiday by submitting a written request to the
principal in advance. This can include the religious holiday and up to two
days of travel. If more travel time is required, it may be counted as an
excused absence from the principal.
UNEXCUSED ABSENCES:
- Unexcused - An
unexcused absence occurs when a student misses class, but does not have an
valid reason with or without a note from a parent or guardian.
- Truant – Truancy is
an illegal absence from school. A student is considered truant when he or
she leaves school without permission or is out of their assigned area without
permission. RHS is a closed campus. Students are not to leave school
property for lunch.
It is the current practice
at RHS to contact the parent/guardian of absent students on the day of the
absence. Although this is not always possible, it is the goal on a daily basis.
The best way to keep our kids in school and help them succeed is through
communication between the school district and parents. We make every attempt to
keep you informed of your child’s attendance before it becomes a problem.
