02/09/2012 - Parent Training Sessions for Winter/Spring 2012

Georgetown ISD is announcing a variety of parent training sessions that will be offered from February through May. All of the training sessions will be held at the Williams Annex located at 1011 Ash Street (behind Williams Elementary) in Georgetown.   • February 14 - “Visual Charts: how they are used at school and at home”. Please join us for a presentation by Annette Jones, Speech Therapist and ASD Specialist. This class is part of the Brown Bag/Make & Take series to give caregivers additional Tools & Strategies to work with their child. Time: 11:30 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. Please RSVP by February 13, 2012 Please feel free to bring a lunch, iced tea and water provided

  • February 16 - “Guardianship and Other Legal Options”. Rebecca Ryan, Estate Planning & Special Ed Attorney, will offer insight into several legal options for caretakers of adults with disabilities. Time: 6:45 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Please RSVP by February 15, 2012

  • February 28 - Book Study: “SOS Help for Parents: A practical guide for handling common everyday behavior problems” by Lynn Clark, PhD. SOS Help for Parents is a very helpful book that discusses common behavior problems and several different ways for handling these problems. Additionally, there are helpful hints and tips for avoiding common pitfalls when applying these solutions. Topics include how to handle aggression, communication problems, and homework resistance. Solutions include the time-out method, points/tokens and contracts, and active ignoring. The book is easy to read and includes many helpful graphics, cartoons and quizzes. It is available from various retailers for around $10. The class is structured around reading SOS Help for Parents. Although part of the class is focused on discussing the book, a large portion of the class will be structured discussion about the book. Feel free to bring any success stories or questions about applying methods talked about in the books. The goal is to support parents in feeling confident applying the various methods from the book in their own homes. The facilitator is Rachel Leppo, a graduate student in the University of Texas at Austin School Psychology Program and is currently receiving doctoral training in assessment, therapy, consultation, research and practice. Rachel is also currently completing field experience in GISD. Time: 6:45 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Please RSVP by February 27, 2012

  • March 6 - “File Folders and Structured Activities”. Please join us for a presentation by Dawn Jennings, GISD Special Ed Parent Liaison.    This class is part of the Brown Bag / Make & Take series to give caregivers additional Tools & Strategies to work with their child.
