Objective for the Week:  Introduce the first English settlements in North America including Jamestown, Virginia and Plymouth, Massachusetts.

8.49 (8.15B TEKS/SE) Describe the characteristics and the benefits of the U.S. free enterprise system during the 18th and 19th centuries.

8.13 (8.5A TEKS/SE) Describe major domestic problems faced by the leaders of the new Republic such as maintaining national security, creating a stable economic system, setting up the court system, and defining the authority of the central government.

8.3 (8.1C TEKS/SE) Explain the significance of the following dates: 1607, 1776, 1787, 1803, and 1861-1865.

8.71 (8.22B TEKS/SE) Describe the importance of free speech and press in a democratic society.

8.72 (8.22C TEKS/SE) Summarize a historical event in which compromise resulted in a peaceful resolution.

Anticipatory Set:   What was the "Lost Colony of Roanoke" and how did it come to be called that?

 

Activities & Resources
Group:  Begin the study of chapter 3 by taking notes and get together in groups to discuss.
 


   

Assessment

Independent Practice: Chapter review sheets over Chapter 3 Section 1 & 2.

Closure  The Lost Colony of Roanoke failed as the first English colony due to communication and transportation problems as well as the inability to produce food to sustain itself.

Materials  Textbook, notebooks, colored markers, overhead projector, television, dvd player, united streaming

 

Accommodations/Modifications

Make appropriate accommodations for each individual student based on their individual educational plan. Due to confidentiality, individual student assignments will be placed in class folders for the substitute teacher to administer.
