Fall '05 Business Link

Students Work in the "Real World" for a Day

Each semester the students enrolled in Career Connections are sent out into the community to job-shadow in the career field of their choice.  This project is called Business Link.  The purpose of Business Link is to allow students to explore the career they most want to pursue.  Students sometimes come back from their day having made the decision NOT to pursue the career they thought they wanted.  If this happens, Business Link has served its purpose and will prevent these students from wasting valuable high school and college time working toward a career that would not suit them in the end.

The Fall Business Link, which was on Wednesday, November 16th, sent more than 200 Georgetown middle school students into the world of work, with nearly 80 participating businesses.  Students experienced meteorology with Ilona Torok of KVUE-TV, helped produce commercials at Clear Channel Radio, and created their own AutoCad drawings at Entech Sales & Service.  We had a diverse group of businesses - all of which were very generous with their time and resources to make the day fun and educational for the students.

This project would not be possible without the help of parents!  Parents - or "Supervisors" - transported groups of students to their business, and some parents even spent their entire day supervising.

Thank you to all the businesses, parents and teachers who helped with the Fall Business Link!
