1.  Writing:  Free write, 200+ words

The students may write on any topic(s) they wish.  Volunteers may read their work aloud to the class.  :)  Writer’s notebook – Fortitude/life principle/quote

2.  Sustained Silent Reading – Independent novels / Reading records.    

English language learners will receive additional assistance as they pair-read with an instructional aide and summarize what they have read aloud.  Students may note parallels from their reading to other, more familiar stories and/or personal experience. All students will record their reading daily.

3.  Literature:  “Flowers For Algernon”, pp. 214-25(end).  The students will compare and contrast Charlie’s development parallels with Algernon’s; infer Charlie’s progress; make a judgment on the experiment; and, analyze why the ability to ask questions is an important part of intelligence.  Critical Thinking #1-5, p. 225 and handouts, p. 92, 64-5.

Materials:  individual novel, reading record, blue or black ink pen, teacher-made notes, notebook paper, writer’s notebook, literature textbook,

Homework:  Build Vocabulary, p. 92, and multiple choice questions, pp. 64-5.  if not completed in class. 

Assessment:

The students will receive daily grades for their free write, other various written assignments, quizzes, and a participation grade for sustained silent reading. 

* The Reading Record counts as a test grade each nine weeks.  Students are expected to fill it out daily.

Teacher observations through the writing process; class participation

Informal verbal and written checks for understanding;

Self evaluation of work completed

Late Work:  First day – minus ten points;

                       Second day – minus twenty points; 

                       Third day – a zero for the grade. 

Students do not lose points for work that is late due to an absence, as long as the student completes the assignment and turns it in the day after the absence.  Please check the class planner and see the teacher about make-up work.  Please see the Tippit Middle School student handbook for further information, Appendix A.

Accommodations/Modifications

Modified written tests/assignments as needed based on each student’s individual education plan.  Content mastery assistance is readily available for students daily.

Tutorials (“stretch time”) are daily from 1: 06-1:33 p.m. if extra time or help is needed.  :)  Students are welcome to seek help from 7:00 – 8:00 a.m. in the cafeteria (“homework haven”) and 8:00 -8:20 a.m. before classes begin daily.  Tutoring is also available from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.  (Please sign-up.)
