Character Journal Guidelines
REMEMBER: Write the thoughts and feelings of the character as you live through the episodes of the book with him/her.
You must include your own personal thoughts and make connections to your own life.
Be able to tell what each new word means in the selection.

Jefferson Davis Bus Personified
1. Re-read the descriptions of the Jefferson Davis School bus on pages 13, 46, 48, and 54.
2. Use at least three examples of figurative language to write a poem in which the bus comes to life as it chases the Logan children on their way to school. Must use an example of onomatopoeia and personification.
3. Include a conversation between at least one of the Logan children and the bus.
4. Illustrate the poem.
Slave Dialogue Guidelines (To be assigned after reading "ABC's" by Frederick Douglass) Slave Dialogue Guidelines (Final copy is due March 8th)
Use these guidelines to help you write a well-developed conversation between a slave and his master in which the master is so moved he grants the slave his freedom.
1. Create a setting for the dialogue (the slave’s recapture) (1830’s – 1860’s)
2. Use 1st person point of view (journal entry; excerpt from a personal narrative, diary etc.) (Become the slave or the master)
3. Use dialogue to show the conversation between the slave and his master. (Follow the rules for using quotation marks for dialogue)
4. Use examples of figurative language such as similes and metaphors (2 or more examples)
