Character Journal Guidelines

 

bulletBecome one of the major characters and record your thoughts, feelings and reflections in your journal through the character’s voice.

 

bulletYou will write one entry for every two chapters (6 entries)

 

bulletIn the top left margin record the Chapter number of your journal entry.

 

bulletChoose one episode from each assigned chapter (one entry for every two chapters) to relive in your Character Journal.

 

bulletWrite on only the front side of each page in your journal.

 

bulletUse exact quotes to support your responses (at least one per entry)
bullet(An exact quote is either the author’s descriptions or the character’s own words)
bulletFollow the standard Cornell Note taking form for your journal with the largest section for the character’s words and thoughts and the summary section to record your own personal thoughts on the actions, motives, decisions, or feelings of the character.  Be sure to include a personal experience or situation that this scene makes you remember.
bulletRecord at the end of your entry three new words from the novel with a short definition for each word.

 

REMEMBER:

Write the thoughts and feelings of the character as you live through the episodes of the book with him/her.

 

You must include your own personal thoughts and make connections to your own life.

 

Be able to tell what each new word means in the selection.

Jefferson Davis Bus Personified

 

1.   Re-read the descriptions of the Jefferson Davis School bus on pages 13, 46, 48, and 54.

 

2.   Use at least three examples of figurative language to write a poem in which the bus comes to life as it chases the Logan children on their way to school. Must use an example of onomatopoeia and personification.

 

3.   Include a conversation between at least one of the Logan children and the bus.  

 

4.   Illustrate the poem.

Slave Dialogue Guidelines

(Final copy is due March 8th)

 

 Use these guidelines to help you write a well-developed conversation between a slave and his master in which the master is so moved he grants the slave his freedom.

 

1. Create a setting for the dialogue (the slave’s recapture) (1830’s – 1860’s)

 

2. Use 1st person point of view (journal entry; excerpt from a personal narrative, diary etc.) (Become the slave or the master)

 

3. Use dialogue to show the conversation between the slave and his master. (Follow the rules for using quotation marks for dialogue)

 

4. Use examples of figurative language such as similes and metaphors (2 or more examples)
