Lesson Plans Chemistry 11 24 & 25 08

Objectives

6.20 Demonstrate that new substances can be made when two or more substances are chemically combined and compare the properties of the new substances to the original substances. (TEKS/SE)(6.7A)

112.22b (6.7) Science concepts. The student knows that substances have physical and chemical properties.

T2 (IPC 8.A)

(A) Demonstrate that new substances can be made when two or more substances are chemically combined and compare the properties of the new substances to the original substances. (TEKS/SE)

6.22 Define matter and energy. (TEKS/SE)(6.8A)

112.22b (6.8) Science concepts. The student knows that complex interactions occur between matter and energy.

T2 (IPC 4,5)

(A) Define matter and energy. (TEKS/SE)

Activities and Resources

Monday/Tuesday

After students grade GR&SW page 9-12 in class, we will do the “GAK” experiment.

1.  GAK Experiment-Chemical Change

Students will list the physical properties of Elmer’s glue using their five senses.
1. White 2. Thick 3. Sticky and 4. Slight vinegar smells

Lab equipment
1. One 4 oz bottle of glue (student will supply glue)
2. 1/4 teaspoon of BORAX
3.
125 ml of water
DIRECTION
A) pour 100 ml of water into a plastic cup
B) place 1/4 teaspoon of borax into water and stir
C) pour 4 oz of glue into slowly into the water/borax solution while stirring

2.         The teacher will go over the difference between Acids and Bases (see experiment below)

During the first part of the period students will do the acid-base experiment.  Students will find the ph of at least five household products using litmus paper.
