Objectives
6.13 Collect, analyze, and record information using tools including beakers, petri dishes, meter sticks, graduated cylinders, weather instruments, timing devices, hot plates, test tubes, safety goggles, spring scales, magnets, balances, microscopes, telescopes, thermometers, calculators, field equipment, compasses, computers, and computer probes. (6.4A)

 Activities & Resources
Monday

Teacher will collect supplies.

Student will complete “Who Am I” Handout (Profile sheet)
After each student completes the above handout students will share information and play the "Name Game"

 

The name game is throwing (underhand toss) a spongy ball in a circle.

Rules: Say your name before tossing the sponge. Second time say your name and the person to whom you are throwing the sponge.
Differentiate
GT Students will try to decreases the amount of time needed to pass a spongy ball around a circle.

Asked Teacher science questions that you (The students) know the answer.

Tuesday

The teacher will give the student the school/classroom expectation

Teacher will go over the lab safety contract.

Students will need to take it home, go over it with parents/guardian for signature.  This will be a daily grade

Review the student major points in the student handbook

 

Wednesday/Thursday

Students will write the definition of 19 different kinds of equipment.
Next Tuesday/Wednesday LAB: Students will be given instruction on how to handle lab equipment safely.
    1.    Lab Equipment:
        1. Rings-used to support lab equipment on a ring stand.
        2. Safety goggles-used as eye protection during labs
        3. Ring stand-elevating device for lab equipment
        4. Test tube-used for pouring, mixing or storing small amounts of liquids or solid
        5. Test tube clamp-used to hold test tubes, especially when heated.
        6. Stoppers- made of rubber or cork and used to seal flasks or test tubes. They also can be used in connecting glass tubing.
        7. Test tube racks-used to support the tubes in upright position.
        8. Eye dropper-used to dispense small amounts of liquid.
        9. Spring scale-a weight device that measures small amounts of force usually in NEWTONS.
        10. Graduated cylinder-used for accurately measuring liquids in millileters.
        11. Triple beam balance-a three beamed device that measures mass in grams
        12. Erlenmeyer flask-used for mixing and storing liquids. (Seals)
        13. Beaker-used for pouring and storing liquids. (Does not seal)
        14. Funnel-used for pouring liquids into small mouthed containers
        15. Stirring rod-made of glass or plastic and used to stir or mix solutions
        16. Thermometer-measuring temperature, usually in C
        17. Magnifying glass-enlarge objects for visual
        18. Alcohol lamp-burns alcohol as fuel and used to heat items in lab.
        19. Bunsen burners-burns natural gas as fuel and used to heat items.

    2.    LAB: Students will be given instruction on how to handle lab equipment safely. (Teacher Demonstration)

    3.    The teacher will go over safety contracts with the students( Repeat)

Friday/Monday (Next Weeks)

    The students in groups (3-5) will pick-up (handle) the different types lab equipment (see 1-19 above)

    Students will create a foldable based on the different types of equipment from the notes.
