Village Elementary is partnering with Habitat for
Humanity to help build a house for a local family.
We are excited about this unique opportunity to
enhance classroom instruction by involving our
students in a service learning project that will
have a lasting impact on a family in our Georgetown
community. The construction on this home just began
on Wednesday, November 28th and will
continue until its projected completion sometime
right before Easter.
Each
grade level will utilize opportunities to integrate
this project into classroom instruction. Students
learn best when they can apply their learning to
something that is meaningful in their lives. We
hope that through their involvement in this project,
all students will develop a deeper understanding of
many grade level concepts, but will also become more
empowered to make a difference in their community.
Our
goal is to raise $12,000 for Habitat for Humanity to
reduce the cost of this home. We realize that
during this season many families enjoy giving to
those in need. If your family or friends would like
to make a donation to Habitat for Humanity, we will
accept donations on their behalf throughout the next
four months. Also, if you are interested in
assisting with building the home, work days are
every Saturday and Wednesday. We will have some
designated Village workdays when staff and Village
parents can work together at the site. Children
under 18 cannot be on the worksite for safety
reasons. We have worked it out with the builder for
our students to have an opportunity later in the
year to assist with painting and landscaping.
The
family we have chosen to help is a family of five.
There are three children in the home, two boys and
one girl. One of the boys is handicapped. The home
will be equipped with ramps and other features to
accommodate the special needs of this child. The
address of the home is 1714 Candee. You are
encouraged to take your child by the home in the
upcoming weeks and months. We also plan to post
updated photos of the progress we are making on our
school website and share them with students at
school.
We are very proud of the quality
education we provide for all students at Village
Elementary. We continue to look for ways to enrich
their learning with activities that will benefit
both their intellectual and emotional development.
Look for information in our future Village Voice
editions on how you may support our efforts and let
the Georgetown community know that the students at
Village Elementary are making a difference. We will
kick-off our fundraising efforts this week. Come by
and look at the blueprint posted at the front of the
school. |
