Village Literacy Lab
Building Solid Reading Skills

The teachers and staff of Village Elementary are dedicated to helping our students achieve academic success--especially in the area of reading.  Each fall, winter, and spring, our students complete an assessment of reading.  We use the Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) and the Texas Primary Reading Inventory (TPRI) for the students in grades K-2.  We use TAKS Benchmark assessments for students in grades 3-5.

Students whose scores indicate a difficulty with reading skills and/or reading comprehension qualify for service in the Literacy Lab.  This service most often takes the form of literacy groups.  The groups come to the lab 4-5 days per week for 30 minutes each day.  Our program includes phonological awareness activities, letter/sound recognition, decoding strategies, sight word recognition, fluency practice, vocabulary expansion, and comprehension strategies through active reading.  For more information about how students qualify for this service, please click here.

We also offer Basic Language Skills, an intensive Orton-Gillingham based program for students with dyslexia.  Students participate in the program for 45-50 minutes a day, four days a week.  It is recommended that identified students remain in the program for three years.  For more information about our process for identifying children with dyslexia click here.

We invite you to visit each of our pages to learn about our individual specialties and interests!
