Artist of the Month

Frida Kahlo is our November artist of the month.  She was a very famous woman artist from Mexico.

She began painting when she was injured in a bus accident that left her in the hospital for a long time.  Her mother had a mirror installed on the ceiling above her hospital bed and she began painting portraits of herself.

The portraits told about her interesting life and her relationship with her artist husband Diego Rivera.

This week, we are working on our final self-portrait drawing that includes clues to our personality, interests, and life.  Kahlo was an inspiration for our self-portraits.

"I paint my own reality. The only thing I know is that I paint because I need to, and I paint whatever passes through my head without any other consideration." -JKahlo

"I leave you my portrait so that you will have my presence all the days and nights that I am away from you." -Kahlo

The October Artist of the Month is Georgia O’ Keefe.  She is well known for her paintings of flowers, bones, skulls and other cool things in nature.  What makes her paintings stand out from others?  She painted everything on a large scale, really big!  Her flower paintings are so large that you may not even notice that it is a flower.  She focuses on the interesting lines and shapes that make up the objects.

A quote by O’ Keefe:  “I'll paint what I see-what the flower is to me, but I'll paint it big and they will be surprised into taking the time to look at it-I will make even busy New Yorkers take time to see what I see of flowers."

Our next project is inspired by O’ Keefe!
