Second Grade Scoop

Annie Purl Elementary

October 2009

Fall is here!

It is hard to believe that October is here already!  We have been working very hard these first few weeks. Lots of time has been spent on learning procedures and expectations of second grade. Students have done a wonderful job of transitioning and learning their roles.

As stated at the beginning of the year, homework is an important part of promoting responsible behavior among 2nd graders.  Homework is checked daily and includes spelling, math, and reading.   Reading Logs are collected each Monday morning. This is part of their Reading grade each week, and PTA has included an added bonus for fulfilling reading requirements each week.  Parents must sign reading logs and total minutes read in order for students to receive bonuses.

We are meeting in our various reading groups, and covering a wide variety of skills each day. Your child may have a certain assignment for the reading group and they are not to read past that point. Rereading is great for fluency practice. Remember , your child does not benefit from reading books that are too difficult. In fact, it hurts their reading to struggle.

Our reading testing has been completed. Results will be given to each of you during our parent conferences. If you have not scheduled a conference yet, please let me know times that will work for you. I can schedule after school or during planning.
