How do I know if my child id G/T?
High achieving students comprehend at a higher level, are attentive, generally have the right answers, enjoys learning, absorbs information, works diligently, and master concepts within 6-8 repetitions.
Gifted students comprehend and make connections at a higher level, answers correctly and contributes new ideas, enjoys the challenge and being creative, and masters concepts with 1-3 repetitions.

How may I nominate my child for testing?
Parents and teachers may submit a student's information for testing.  Parents must complete an inventory and give written consent for follow-up testing.  Examples of student work is highly recommended when submitting a student for G/T testing.  Click on the link below to view the GISD policy for screening new students for the G/T program.

When can I have my child tested for G/T?
Student paperwork and names are submitted between October and November.  Look for a NOTIFICATION OF GIFTED/TALENTED CHILD FIND CAMPAIGN K-5 letter to come home in your child's Eagle Folder on the week of October 12-16.  This letter will explain the nomination and evaluation process.  Upon receipt of the completed parent and/or teacher packet and the parent permission to evaluate forms, the evaluation process begins.  Feel free to pick up a parent packet from the school counselor at your child's school.  The packet must be complete and returned to the school counselor no later than November 17, 2009.  Click on the link below to view various Gifted/Talented forms available online.

What paperwork do I need to complete to have my child tested for G/T?

When will I know if my child has qualified for G/T services?
Due to the large amount of students being tested and the amount of tests given to students on an individual basis, the Student Review Committee will not meet until April.  Parents will be notified of their child's scores and whether or not they qualified for the program at the end of the school year.  Click on the link below to view GISD policy on Identification and Placement.

When will newly qualified students receive G/T services?
Students who qualify for testing this year will not receive services until the following year.

 

 

What tests are given to my child and what score do they have to receive to qualify for the program?
Students are given a Mental Abilities test (KBIT2) which is given on an individual basis.  They are also given a Language Arts and Math Achievement test (KTEA2) given on an individual basis.  Lastly, students are also given a Science and Social Studies Achievement test (Stanford 10) in a group setting.  Students must receive a 96 percentile and be in the 9th stanine in order to qualify for the G/T services.  Other tests are also available if it is deemed necessary to collect more data.

 

 

What does the Texas Education Agency have to say about G/T services?
According to the Texas Education Agency, the State Goals for Services for Gifted Students is given below...

Students who participate in services designed for gifted students will demonstrate skills in self-directed learning, thinking, research, and communication as evidenced by the development of innovative products and performances that reflect individuality and creativity and are advanced in relation to students of similar age, experience, or environment. High school graduates who have participated in services for gifted students will have produced products and performances of professional quality as part of their program services.

From which teacher will my G/T student receive grades?
Students in the G/T mathematics program are given grades by the G/T Math pull-out teacher (Mrs. Jones).  Students in the G/T Research/Communication program (those students identified in Language Arts, Social Studies, and Science) are given grades by the homeroom teacher.
