Kristine Powers is a Resource Language Arts Teacher at Benold Middle School, where she serves as the team lead for the special education department. She is passionate about helping all students come to love reading and writing.
Before Benold Middle School and GISD:
Previously, she was an Academic Coach for the National Football Foundation, which placed a program called Play It Smart in urban schools that had a school/organization link between the NFL football team in that city and the school.
There, Kristine was responsible for coaching high school football players to a higher level of academic success. In her role, Kristine worked with local businesses, the Jacksonville Jaguars, the coaching staff at William Raines High School, teachers at the school, and Play It Smart executive staff to deliver a program that used students’ love of the sport to get their buy-in toward working on academic goals.
During her tenure, Kristine brought two students from Raines High School in Jacksonville, Florida, to a leadership camp in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Thanks to a grant from the Jaguars, the students took their first airplane flights ever and received training in leadership and personal success.
Kristine is married to Erik Powers, a senior scientist at Parsons Corporation. They live with their two sons, Alexander and Nicholas, and their other two boys, a guinea pig and a cat named Percy and Panther. In her spare time, Kristine loves writing, reading, and running.
A graduate of Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, Kristine earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and then attended the University of Florida for a Master of Education degree in School Counseling and an Education Specialist degree. She later went through iteachTEXAS to obtain teaching certificates in Core Subjects 4-8, Special Education EC-12, and English Language Arts and Reading 7-12.
