Mrs. Smith

Hello, my name is JoAnne Smith and I am thrilled to be the Librarian at Pickett Elementary! I have 20 years of teaching experience in both public and private schools. Last year was my first year as a librarian and my first year at Pickett. Previously, I taught at Carver Elementary as a Dual Language Kindergarten teacher. Over the years I have had the opportunity to teach Pre-K through 3rd graders and have volunteered with Jr. High and High School students in our church Youth group for about 10 years.

Becoming a Librarian was a long-time dream of mine since my children were small. I enrolled in graduate school in the fall of 2017 and received my Masters of Educational Technology and Library Science in May of 2019. I am very excited about this opportunity as a Librarian and look forward to serving our Pickett Pioneers in our final year at Pickett.

In my spare time I enjoy reading, quilting, relaxing and spending time with my family and my precious dog Leia. You might say I enjoy learning, as Leia and I are back in school for more training. We are working towards Leia becoming a certified Canine Good Citizen and a registered Therapy Dog.

My goal is to provide a safe, positive learning environment where students can read, explore, and collaborate while using critical thinking and problem-solving skills.  Libraries are no longer quiet book repositories where students simply come to read and check out books. Students will learn about digital citizenship, literacy, and research skills as well as work in cooperative groups in our Makerspace. I would love to see students extend their learning from their classroom into the library.
