ONLINE LEARNING RESOURCES FOR FAMILIES
Beginning April 6, 2020, the at-home learning model will shift from optional enrichment activities to TEKS-aligned, teacher-designed on-line learning experiences. Parents and students will receive information from their campus beginning as early as April 3, 2020 with more detailed information. And, teachers will communicate lesson expectations directly with their students no later than Monday morning, April 6, 2020.
A new Technology Instructions for Parents & Students web page lists digital tools that are frequently used by teachers and students, along with step-by-step instructions for how students can access and use these tools at home. These are being shared with parents as a resource, in the event their child's teacher uses one or more of these tools during the upcoming weeks of remote learning. This portal will go live tomorrow, Friday April 3 by Noon along with updated information on our Distance Learning hub.
GISD teachers use Google Classroom, Seesaw, Class Dojo, or Schoology. Teachers will email students information about which platform they will use during this time of at-home learning. Students can expect weekly messages/updates from their teacher(s) about the learning expectations. Elementary-aged students may need help checking their account for messages. Teachers will also communicate with students about how to share their learning.
Students may be asked to:
- Submit a document to their online platform account;
- Take a picture of their work and upload it into the online platform or email it to their teacher;
- Email a message summarizing their learning; or
- Engage in an online video lesson.
There are many possibilities for how teachers might invite students to share their learning. Teachers will communicate office hours for students to ask questions or receive assistance. If you have any questions about your students learning plan(s), please contact the classroom teacher.
Technology Discounts for Families
Many families are contacting us asking how they can purchase their own technology at a discount rather than borrowing from the district. GISD has partnered with these vendors who have created special pricing and options to support our students during closures to support learning at home. Please consider purchasing while the pricing remains low.*Important Notes: Technology you buy from our partner vendors does not come configured with GISD software. Although students can accomplish most learning tasks with simply Google Chrome browser and internet connection, some high school classes require specific software. GISD cannot make this software available but will provide district laptops for these students to borrow. GISD does not provide technical support for personal devices you purchase.
