    Howdy GISD Family,

Education is designed to take place in collaborative spaces like the classroom, and I know this transition for learning at home is challenging. It’s not what we want either. However, together, we will get through this! Our teachers are ready and equipped to support your student. Campus phone lines are also staffed on regular business days from 8 am - 2 pm. Please continue to ask for the support you need. We’re working to accommodate everyone’s needs and realize that it means adapting our work every day.

    CHECKING OUT TECHNOLOGY DEVICES

We had a tremendous response to technology lending today. As a result, we are making a few changes to create a better experience for everyone.

    Please note these IMPORTANT CHANGES:

    1. Our order of WiFi hotspots has not arrived.  We will provide instructions on how and when families can check one out when we get them.
    2. We are moving the check out locations FROM the three lunch sites to the two high schools. We are also extending the times to check out devices and ask that families come ONLY during the times assigned for your home campus.

    Georgetown High School

      • 9:00 AM to 12:00 Noon GHS, Forbes and Benold
      • 12:00 Noon to 5:00 PM Village, Ford, McCoy, Frost, Cooper

    Eastview High School

      • 9:00 AM to 12:00 Noon EVHS, Tippit and Wagner
      • 12:00 Noon to 5:00 PM Mitchell, Purl, Pickett, Carver
    1. It’s worth noting that GISD does not have enough devices to accommodate every student in the district. Also, remember, it is not required that you have a GISD device to learn from home.  Any internet-based computer you own will work. If you have adequate access at home, we appreciate you allowing us to ensure we can provide devices first for families who do not currently have any access.

    SCHOOL SUPPLIES

School supplies (paper, pencils, notebooks, craft supplies, etc.) will be available for families to pick up on Wednesday, April 8 during lunch at each of our meal distribution sites. These materials are not required and are being made available for families who may not have these resources available at home.

APRIL 10 and 13 SCHOOL HOLIDAYS

Our district is closed for all business, including meal distribution, on Friday, April 10 and Monday, April 13. We will return to our current operations on Tuesday, April 14. Enjoy the long holiday weekend!

    ACCESSING COUNSELING SERVICES

The GISD Counseling Services department, intervention services, and our community’s mental health service partners are available to support our students and their families as much as possible during this time. We have more information about these excellent resources and how they may be accessed on our website.

    FIND US ON FACEBOOK

Hey, GISD is now on Facebook! If you haven’t visited the page to like or follow us, please check it out and share with others in the community who may benefit from connecting with us there. As a reminder, we have rules of engagement posted under “About” that outline what our community can expect from the district related to engagement on that platform.

THIS WEEK’S SOCIAL MEDIA CHALLENGE: #GISDAdapts

These times have certainly been an opportunity to use and grow in our Learner Profile attributes! With that in mind, our social media challenge for the week is #GISDAdapts. Please take a moment to share one way you’re demonstrating this important life skill and use tag it with #GISDAdapts on your social channels.

    Be well!

    April 2, 2020

    Greetings, GISD Families!

We are approaching the end of the week and preparing for a new week of remote instruction, and that brings some updates to share with you.

    ONLINE LEARNING RESOURCES FOR FAMILIES

Beginning April 6, 2020, the at-home learning model will shift from optional enrichment activities to TEKS-aligned, teacher-designed online learning experiences. Parents and students will receive information from their campus beginning as early as April 3, 2020 with more detailed information. And, teachers will communicate lesson expectations directly with their students no later than Monday morning, April 6, 2020.

A new Online Learning Portal lists digital tools that are frequently used by teachers and students, along with step-by-step instructions for how students can access and use these tools at home.  These are being shared with parents as a resource, in the event their child's teacher uses one or more of these tools during the upcoming weeks of remote learning. This portal will go live tomorrow, Friday, April 3 by Noon along with updated information on our Distance Learning Hub.

    GRADING

As we take the next steps with our GISD Grading Practices for the 4th Nine Weeks, we would like to reflect on our belief that instruction should be designed based on the needs of students and that our actions should be student-centered.

During this time, we are finding innovative ways to deliver instruction, but also are looking at our assessment practices to ensure all learners have the opportunity to succeed and are prepared for the next step in their academic journey.

Therefore, as we address GISD grading practices for the 4th Nine Weeks for 2019-2020, these are specific considerations that have influenced our district decision:

    • Equity of instruction & access (face-to-face vs. distance learning)
    • Length of time for school closure
    • Flexibility during remote instruction
    • Unique and highly-varied at-home learning setting
    • Unique family needs during this time
    • Impact on learner GPA Class Rank/GPA Cumulative Score
    • Impact on NCAA eligibility criteria

You will find full details on our proposed grading guidelines during closure on our website, and we encourage you to review this information.

    MEAL DISTRIBUTION & LIMITED DELIVERY

Tomorrow, April 3, transportation and nutrition services will be teaming up to deliver hot meals to students in limited areas of our community. Students who are served by our backpack buddy program are being notified through their Smart Tag accounts. However, any student in the community may access this service and can look for buses in the following neighborhoods between 11 am and Noon:

    • Riverside
    • Cypress Creek
    • The Oaks
    • Rockmoore
    • Sunnyvale complexes

Our regular meal distribution will continue at Purl, Frost and Tippit schools daily for breakfast and lunch via drive-through and walk-up service.

    ENEWS

Before the closure, it was our practice to send our weekly eNewsletter on Thursdays.  To minimize the number of communications each week during the closure,  we are simply including a link to our eNewsletter here.  Please know that information is always available on our homepage for reference where you’ll find information on important events, opportunities and news from our partners.

The best part of my every day is interacting with the staff, students and families we serve. While that looks different now,  I have enjoyed seeing many of you at school sites this week for meals and technology distribution. The smiles on kids’ faces remind us that everything is going to be alright, and we’ll be better on the other side of this. We are learning our way through this with you. I know it’s not easy right now as you juggle work, parenting and learning responsibilities, and from what I see on social media, you’re doing an amazing job!

    Be well!
