Advanced Placement, AP Exams & Advanced Courses

Advanced Placement (College Board AP Courses) and Advanced courses prepare students with the habits of mind needed for successful completion of a college degree.

Beginning in middle school, Advanced  courses are offered to prepare students for success as Advanced Placement (AP) students. Beginning in high school, Advanced Placement courses are offered to prepare students for success as college students. Students who successfully complete an AP course and earn a score of three or higher on the corresponding AP exam may receive college credit for the course. Students in high school may select from a wide variety of AP courses in English, languages other than English, mathematics, science, social studies, and fine arts. Question: What can an AP exam do for your child? When students earn a score of 3 or higher on an AP exam, they automatically will receive college course credit at all public universities in Texas. Additionally, many private colleges and universities across the nation accept AP exam credits. Sometimes the credit matches what the course is called (e.g., the AP English Language and Composition exam usually gives a student credit for English Rhetoric & Composition in college). Sometimes the AP exam credit is accepted as elective credit at a college (e.g., if a student’s degree plan doesn’t require a course in Human Geography, but your child earned a 3 or higher on the AP Human Geography exam, the college might give your child credit for an elective course instead or a course that is closely related, content wise). If your child attends a college where one 3 hour course costs around $1,200, and your child takes 5 AP exams with qualifying scores, you could save $6,000 and your child can save 15 hours of course credit in college (typically one semester of study)! Keep in mind that if your child earns a 1 or a 2 on an AP exam, there is no consequence! They simply gained testing experience and have learned a lot about what to expect on future exams. Students can also re-take exams, but they would need to wait until the administration in the following Spring.
