Understanding the PSAT/NMSQT
The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is a standardized test that provides firsthand practice for the SAT. It also gives you a chance to enter the National Merit Scholarship Program and gain access to college and career planning tools.
Who Takes It?
It is taken by high school freshman, sophomores, and juniors in the 3rd week of October. Each campus sends out specific dates to parents via campus communications.
Younger Grades
We offer opt-in testing for 8th graders (PSAT 8/9) and administer it to all 9th graders.
What's on the Test?
The PSAT has two main sections, which are broken down into modules:
- Reading and Writing: This section measures your ability to understand and analyze texts from various subjects, and to find and fix errors in grammar, usage, and punctuation.
- Math: This section covers a range of math practices, with an emphasis on problem solving, modeling, using tools strategically, and using algebraic structure. A calculator is allowed on the entire math section.
