GISD Mental Health & Basic Need Resources

Georgetown ISD has established a strategic blueprint which focused on four priority areas. While the first priority is student learning, growth, and progress, the other three priority areas support this cause. Strategic priority area two places focus on student wellbeing and our effort to prioritize the physiological and psychological safety of our students. With these priorities in mind, GISD Counseling Services works with families to understand what their student needs and the best place for the support to be accessed. Whether that is working within the school or connecting families to the community, our team has a number of options to consider when working with families.

School Based Therapy

TCHATT

Senate Bill 11 (86th Regular Session, 2019) established the Texas Child Mental Health Care Consortium (TCMHCC) to foster collaboration on pediatric mental health care among medical schools in Texas. One of the five initiatives of TCMHCC is the Texas Child Health Access through Telemedicine (TCHATT) program. TCHATT provides telemedicine or telehealth programs to school districts to help identify and assess the behavioral health needs of children and adolescents and provide access to mental health services. Georgetown ISD partnered with TCHATT at the start of the 2021-2022 school year. Our school based therapy team works with families and provides access to TCHATT as an option based on the needs of the student and family. For more information....

School Counselors

School counselors in Georgetown ISD as well as the State of Texas align their work to the Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Programs. In addition to being legislatively required to align our work to this model, doing so ensures that the work of the Professional School Counselor is of the highest quality and effectively implemented for all students. The Texas Model also provides limitations to the work of the Professional School Counselor. While school counselors provide guidance lessons, individual planning, and responsive services to students, they do not provide therapy.

Georgetown ISD believes that when students feel safe, healthy, and supported, they are better able to focus on learning and achieve their full potential. The Georgetown Independent School District Community Resource Guide exists to provide our community with information about local non-profit or low-cost services available to support a family's well-being. Georgetown ISD does not advocate or recommend any specific agency, program, or service. This information is supplied as a reference if you choose to use it. This list is assembled as a courtesy and is not a complete or comprehensive list of providers.

Community Resource Guide

Carver Center

The Carver Center for Families is located in the heart of Georgetown (1200 West 17th Street) at the site of the original Carver Elementary school. The site was purchased from GISD by the Georgetown Health Foundation and launched the center on behalf of the Georgetown community in January of 2023. STARRY, a local non-profit organization, anchors the site managing daily operations, logistics, outreach, and programming. In addition to the center being used as an inclusive gathering place for all members of the greater Georgetown community, the site will house a number of local area non-profit organizations with the overall goal of collaboratively addressing the social determinants that may exist for a family.

While families may access the center independent of the school district, the GISD Counseling Services team may work with families to submit an inquiry to the center on behalf of a family when basic needs determinants arise for a family. Once permission is received by the family to submit information to the Carver Center, specific non-profit organizations will have the opportunity to connect with the family independent of GISD.

Georgetown Community Therapeutic Supports

Overview

We believe that for students to succeed in school, their mental health must be a priority. When students feel emotionally secure and supported, they are better prepared to learn, grow, and navigate challenges. We are incredibly grateful to live in a community where dedicated providers exist providing essential mental health resources, ensuring our students and their families have access to the therapeutic support they need.

In addition to these Collaboratives, those seeking mental health therapeutic support also use search specific search engines such as: Texas Counseling Association, Psychology Today, and/or therapy.com. These type of specific search engines often require clinicians to have a membership to the hosting organization. GISD has no affiliation with the organizations or the individuals listed within them.

Mental Health Collaborative

The GISD Mental Health Collaborative exists as a means of connecting families to local counseling practices when services provided are paid through Medicaid, the family's insurance, or out-of-pocket funds. Families who choose to participate in this service will provide information about their needs to a GISD Counseling Services team member. Once this information is submitted and permission is provided to do so, the information shared by the family is sent to local counseling practices within the community. With this information in hand, non-GISD private providers have the opportunity to connect with the family directly if their services match the needs of the family. The hope is that this effort will make connecting with a private provider as easy as possible for those who seek it out. This service is limited to supporting the initial connection between families and local counseling practices. GISD is not responsible for the cost of services and cannot guarantee any outcome. Non-Profit Collaborative

The Community-Based Mental Health Collaborative is a group of non-profit organizations who independently serve their Georgetown Community. While each of these organizations are unique from each other, they share a common desire to serve our community while sharing a central office at 2100 Scenic Drive, Suite 140 in the heart of Georgetown. GISD can help connect families to the organizations within the group when mental health supports are needed and the family resources require low-cost options. While families may contact these organizations independent from GISD, our school district has created a process to help individuals make a connection.
