CURRENT BILINGUAL/ESL PROGRAMS IN GISD
Dual Language One-Way Program (PK only)
Dual language is a bilingual/biliteracy program model in which students identified as English learners are served in both English and Spanish and are prepared to meet reclassification criteria in order to be successful in English-only instruction not earlier than six or later than seven years after the student enrolls in school. The program provides English Language Learners with a structured sequence of academic skills in their native language, as well as accelerated skill development in English language proficiency through English as a Second Language (ESL) methodology. The English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS) are an integral part of the required curriculum in each subject of the TEKS and ensure that English Language Learners have the full opportunity to learn English and succeed academically.
