English as a Second Language (ESL)

English as a Second Language (ESL) program services are offered in GISD for students in PK-12 whose native language is other than English to develop and accelerate their English language proficiency. The English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS) are an integral part of the required curriculum in each subject of the TEKS and ensure that English Language Learners have the full opportunity to learn English and succeed academically.  The program provides English Language Learners with an intensive program of English language and literacy instruction focusing on language learning strategies, listening, speaking, reading, and writing proficiency, through the use of English as a Second Language (ESL) methodology.  Academic content courses incorporate sheltered instruction strategies and linguistic accommodations.
