The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act
Under the definition of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Act, the term "homeless" includes individuals who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence, such as those who are sharing the temporary housing of other persons due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or a similar reason; are living in motels, hotels, trailer parks, or camping grounds due to the lack of alternative accommodations; are living in emergency or transitional shelters; are abandoned in hospitals; or who are living in cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings, or substandard housing.
A wide variety of services and assistance are available to homeless students, both from the school district and state and community organizations.
