GISD's G.R.E.A.T Program

GISD Recognizes and Elevates Aspiring Teachers


The application window is open late January to early February, with an information session provided to explain our cohort process.
 

WHAT IS G.R.E.A.T.?

In partnership with Teachworthy and Indiana Wesleyan University, GISD’s G.R.E.A.T. program provides innovative pathways that support paraprofessionals in obtaining a Bachelor’s degree and teacher certification while working as classroom instructors. While in the program, members will be placed into a classroom under the guidance of a certified teaching mentor, earn college credit through participating in professional learning alongside certified teachers, and receive increased compensation while working toward a degree and teacher certification. 


ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • must participate in an informational session
  • must be a full-time paraprofessional with 180 days (one school year) of service in the district at the time of the application 
  • must be in good standing with your campus and district regarding performance and attendance
  • must have a minimum of 30 college credit hours already and not already possess a bachelor's degree
  • receive a principal recommendation
  • applicant seeks a certification area that is determined as a high-needs area in GISD


TO BECOME A G.R.E.A.T. CLASSROOM INSTRUCTOR, MEMBERS MUST:

  • successfully complete Teachworthy pedagogy modules before the following school year
  • participate in 20 hours of classroom management training 
  • complete specified GISD coursework
  • collaborate with a Mentor
  • complete college coursework with Indiana Wesleyan University
  • pass required exams for certifications to transition to intern position at full teacher pay
