What is Formative?

Formative is an online platform that allows teachers to design and administer multiple assessment types. When assessments are set up thoughtfully with questions tagged by standards, Formative provides rich data which can inform next steps in instruction. The Gold level of Formative is provided by GISD to all teachers in grades 6 - 12. 

Accessing Formative

If you are a teacher or administrator in grades 6-12, you will access your GISD Formative account by logging in to ClassLink and clicking on the Formative GISD app. If you do not see the Formative GISD app on your ClassLink dashboard but believe you should have access to it, do not try to add it yourself. Contact the GISD Service Desk and request that the app be added for you.

If you are a 6-12 teacher of record with a Skyward gradebook, your classes will be automatically rostered for you in Formative.

How to Use Formative

  • Teach with Formative - 15 minute mini-course for teachers to learn the basics of using Formative
  • Formative for Staff with Administrative Access - If you have administrative access in Formative for your campus or at the district level, this 15 minute mini-course is for you.
  • Formative Resource Hub - Direct links to instructions for common Formative questions as well as subject-specific suggestions for use. Be sure to click the Teachers or District & School Leaders button to bring up the correct resources for your needs.
  • Formative Help Center - Easy to search for answers to your questions about using Formative. GISD currently subscribes to the Gold Plan which may be referenced in the resources. GISD does not subscribe to Newsela integration.
