Section 504 Services

What is Section 504?
Section 504 is a federal civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against students with disabilities in public schools that receive federal funding. Its primary purpose is to ensure that all qualified students with disabilities receive a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE). A student is protected if they have a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, such as learning, seeing, or walking. To guarantee this equal access, schools develop a 504 Plan—a written document that outlines necessary accommodations (like extended test time or preferential seating) which allow the student to participate in the general education curriculum alongside their non-disabled peers.
Importantly, Section 504 has a broader definition of disability than the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), meaning a student who does not require the specialized instruction of an IEP (Individualized Education Program) under IDEA may still be entitled to accommodations under a 504 Plan.
