Passenger Lap/ Shoulder Belts

It is the position of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that new school buses manufactured starting in 2018 will be required to have passenger lap/shoulder belts installed. In August 2016 GISD decided that it would be in the best interest of our students to transition to buses fully equipped with 3 point seat belts. Therefore, many of GISD buses are already equipped with seat belts and meet the new NTSB requirements.

 Policy/Law:

TEC, Chapter 34: Sec. 34.013 states that a school district shall require a student riding a bus operated by or contracted for operation by the district to wear a seat belt if the bus is equipped for seat belts for all passengers on the bus.

 Usage Policy:

All persons riding a GISD school bus that us equipped with seat belts for all passengers will/must be wearing a seat belt when the bus is in motion.

 Training:

The driver will instruct each passenger on the proper use of the seat belt, including how to get it on and off routinely and in the event of an evacuation.

 Discipline:

The driver will also inform each passenger that it is the passenger's responsibility to use the seat belt in a proper manner according to state law and district policy. Failure to properly use a seat belt could result in disciplinary action. All fines issued to passengers by law enforcement for failure to wear their seatbelt are solely the responsibility of the passenger(s) and their gaurdians, and not the responsibility of the district nor driver.
